..Go Ice Skating!

For the last 12 years, the rink has drawn more than 100,000 skaters annually and is free and open to the public. The rink, located on Michigan Avenue between Washington and Madison Streets, will still offer skate rental for only $10.  Hours after the break...

...be a Tourist!

You've come all this way. You can't NOT see the city's most popular tourist attractions, right? Wrong- you totally could. But that's not what this particular post is all about. This is about joining a mass of people in huge crowds and long lines while not encountering a single resident of this city. So let's go! We're visiting...

...Go to the Beach!

Not actually the greatest suggestion this time of year. Try this one sometime in late May.

Our apartment is due west of 31st beach and even on the nicest of days this brand new beach is 50% less crowded than Chicago's more popular beaches. There's a new boat harbor where you can rent jet ski's! There's a grill serving hot sandwiches, fries and even beer!  You can rent a Divvy at Halsted/Archer and drop it off at 31st and the lake.

...Ride a Bike!

Divvy is a new bike sharing system featuring thousands of bikes at hundreds of stations from Andersonville (no, not yet) to Hyde Park (uhm, maybe), available 24/7, 365 days a year. UPDATE: Now installed on our freaking block!

...Kayak!

Kayak Chicago
Also not the best idea in winter months.  Try as early as March or April (with some peppermint schnapps-enhanced hot cocoa in that thermos)

Paddle the Chicago River and learn about its history. Launch in Lincoln Park and paddle south down the North Branch into the loop. Kayak the river while learning of it's history and it's amazing engineering feats under the canopy of beautiful glass skyscrapers and neo-classical icons. No kayaking experience needed.
